Painting over sketch marks

Updated over 3 years ago

Graphite is slippery and can act as a resist to paint. Using a spray fixative will prevent smudging and allow the paint to cover the graphite. Erasers often leave a residue that can interfere with painting, so it is better to sketch very lightly or in water-soluble or coloured pencils and avoid erasing. Some artists also sketch in charcoal and use fixative.
