Pigment Powders

Understanding artists' pigments and why every colour is unique

Pigments are the pure colouring materials that give paints, inks and many other artists' materials their colour. Unlike ready-made paints, dry pigments contain no binder or medium, allowing artists to mix their own paints and experiment with different techniques.

Each pigment is made from a different raw material, such as natural earths, mineral compounds, metal oxides or synthetic pigments. As a result, every pigment has its own unique characteristics, including its colour strength, opacity, particle size, texture and density.

These natural differences are what make each pigment unique and are one of the reasons artists choose one pigment over another.

Jackson's Art Pigments

Jackson's Artist Pigments are sold by weight, not by volume.

We use the same container size across the range, but every pigment has a different natural density. Some pigments are light and fluffy, while others are much denser, so the same weight can take up very different amounts of space.

It's therefore completely normal for one container to appear much fuller than another colour, even though both contain the same stated weight of pigment. A pot that looks less full is not underfilled or faulty – it's simply a natural characteristic of that particular pigment.
