What is a P65 Warning?

Why some products carry a California Proposition 65 safety label and what it really means for artists.

What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 (or P65) is a California-specific law requiring warnings on products that may contain any of over 900 substances linked (even in trace amounts) to health risks.

It applies to a wide range of everyday products - from coffee to ceramics - and is known for its extremely cautious approach. A P65 label does not mean a product is unsafe when used correctly.

Why do some Jackson’s products carry a Proposition 65 (P65) warning?

Some products, including from our Jackson’s Art Supplies ranges, such as paints, pigments, or mediums, may carry a warning about cancer, reproductive harm, or toxicity.

For instance, traditional artist pigments may contain small amounts of metals such as cadmium, cobalt, chromium or lead, which fall under P65.

Common examples include:

  • Cadmium pigments

    Cadmium Red (PR108)

    Cadmium Yellow (PY37)

    Cadmium Orange (PO20)

  • Cobalt pigments

    Cobalt Blue (PB28)

    Cerulean Blue (PB35 / PB36)

    Cobalt Green (PG19)

  • Chromium pigments

    Chromium Oxide Green (PG17)

    Viridian (PG18)

  • Lead-based pigment

Flake White / Cremnitz White (PW1)

Why are these labels on products outside California?

While some companies opt for separate California-specific packaging, Jackson’s uses consistent labelling across all regions. This ensures transparency and regulatory compliance, no matter where you’re shopping from.

Are Jackson’s products safe?

Yes, when used as intended.

All Jackson’s products meet UK, EU, and US safety standards. With standard studio precautions, like good ventilation and avoiding direct skin contact, the risk is considered very low.

If you’d like more detail, we’re happy to provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for any product on our website.
